South Derry Independent Republican Unit

The South Derry Independent Republican Unit was an Irish republican paramilitary unit which operated during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

It was founded in 1973 by members of the IRA who had remained independent after the split of the organisation into the Official IRA and Provisional IRA.[1] The village of Bellaghy in southern County Londonderry was the main operating area of the unit.[1] Despite being independent in name, the group borrowed weapons from both the Official and Provisional IRA, and depending on who they got the weapons off, attribuated their attacks to them.[1]

It disbanded in 1977 when many of its members left to join either the Provisional IRA or INLA.[1]
